ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the resilience of oral pharyngeal wall in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).@*METHOD@#Applied with multiple detector-row spiral CT, 24 patients with OSAHS and 10 volunteers were scanned from nasopharynx to hypopharynx under the normal breathing state and the breathing state of Muller maneuver. The relevant dimensions of area and thickness of retropharyngeal soft tissue were measured in some level in imagings including the soft palatal level, the lingual level and the epiglottic level, then the resilience of these levels were calculated according to the above data.@*RESULT@#The values of resilience of oral pharyngeal wall were larger in patients with OSAHS than those in the volunteers. The difference of the values of resilience in soft palatal level and lingual level was statistically significant (P < 0.01). The values of thickness of retropharyngeal soft tissue in the soft palatal level, the lingual level and the epiglottic level were respectively (7.5 +/- 2.2) mm, (4.8 +/- 1.3) mm, and (2.3 +/- 0.2) mm. There was a significant difference in the thickness in soft palatal level between the patients with OSAHS and the volunteers (P < 0.01). The indexes of Pearson correlation of between the thickness of retropharyngeal soft tissue and the resilience of the pharyngeal wall decreased from the soft palatal level to the epiglottic level in these two groups. Only the value of correlation coefficient in the soft palatal level was statistically significant in patients with OSAHS.@*CONCLUSION@#The study suggested that the resilience of pharyngeal wall could be quantitated by applying with multiple detector-row spiral CT. The resilience of oral pharyngeal and its correlation with thickness of retropharyngeal soft tissue may be the highest in soft palatal level.

ABSTRACT

The pure titanium disks were divided into three groups and etched for 30 minutes with HNO3, hot H2SO4/H2O2 or hot H2SO4/HCl respectively. The treated disks were studied and analyzed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The disks etched with HNO3 had a smooth surface, while those etched with hot H2SO4/H2O2 or hot H2SO4/HCl had rough surfaces, and the surface etched with hot H2SO4/HCl had larger micropores. The XPS analysis demonstrated that the main elements of the surface in three groups were titanium, oxygen and carbon. The carbon concentration was the lowest on the surface etched with hot H2SO4/H2O2 and the highest on that etched with hot H2SO4/HCl. The substances were TiO2, Ti2O3, TiO and metal Ti on the surface etched with HNO3 or hot H2SO4/H2O2. Only TiO2 was detected on the surface etched with hot H2SO4/HCl.

ABSTRACT

Chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS) is a common infectious disease and a subpopulation of patients fail to respond to either medical or surgical intervention.Bacterial biofilms(BBF) are 3-dimensional aggregates of bacteria, which have special properties due to their group structure, including increased resistance to antibiotics in some forms.Evidence suggests that BBF may play an important role in CRS.The goal of this article is to provide an overview of BBF with the special focus on CRS.A further understanding of the role of BBF may lead to the development of more appropriate therapies for CRS.

ABSTRACT

The nasal route is one of the most permeable and highly vascularized site for ensuring rapid drug absorption and onset of therapeutic action. It has been potentially explored as an alternative route for delivery of drugs with poor bioavailability and for the biosensitive and high molecular weight compounds such as proteins, peptides, steroids, vaccines, etc. In this review nasal drug delivery approach and its limitations, some factors influencing drug absorption, mucoadhesion, and the safety of nasal mucoadhesive drug delivery systems as well were discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo prepare a new synthetic macromolecular resin class of denture adhesive (named Comfort-DA).

METHODSTwelve different formulae for denture adhesive were designed by orthogonal design. Each factor affecting tensile bond strength of adhesive was analyzed by ANNOVA to select the best formula. Then the chemical and physical properties, such as tensile bond strength, pH value, and viscosity, were evaluated and compared with Fittydent in vitro also.

RESULTSThe effect of content of polyvinyl acetate and cellulose ether on tensile bond strength exhibited no statistical significance (P > 0.05), while ethyl alcohol and CMC-Na showed statistical significance and mutual action (P < 0.05). Results of testing viscosity and shearing stress showed that there was no significant difference between Fittydent and Comfort-DA (P > 0.05), while Fittydent exhibited a significantly lower tensile bond strength than the prepared one (P < 0.05). The prepared adhesive demonstrated a neutral or slightly basic pH.

CONCLUSIONSThe generally favorable in vitro performance of the prepared adhesive (Comfort-DA) formulation indicated that it might be efficacious denture adhesive.

ABSTRACT

All samples were divided into three groups and subjected to three different surface treatments, i.e. untreated group, group etched with mixed acid of 1:1 HCl and H2SO4 followed by immersion in 6N NaOH solution at 60 degrees C for 24 h and group etched with mixed acid of 1:1 HCl and H2SO4 followed by immersion in 6N NaOH solution at 60 degrees C for 24 h then heated at 600 degrees C for 1 h. After soaked in simulated body fluid for two weeks, a thin calcium phosphate coatings was precipitated on the surfaces of the two treated samples. Results of SEM and EDX showed that calcium phosphate coatings on the surfaces of the titanium samples etched and heated were more even than the titanium samples etched without heating. The analysis of XRD demonstrated the main component of calcium phosphate coating was hydroxyapatite.

ABSTRACT

To study the method of anodic oxidation followed by hydrothermal treatment for cp titanium and to know bone response to thin hydroxyapatite layers in vivo, commercially pure titanium plates were anodized at 200 V-400 V with direct electric current density no more than 50 mA/cm2 for 15 minutes in the electrolytic trough. beta-glycerophosphate sodium(0.03-0.04 M) and calcium acetate(0.2-0.3 M) were used as electrolytes. Then, titanium plates were hydrothermal treated in the autoclave for 2 hours at 280 degrees C-300 degrees C. Polishing and grit-blasting surface was used as control to learn bone response to thin layers. Twelve rabbits were evenly divided into 3 groups, each group was implanted with 12 implants into the rabbits femoral bone. After 4, 8 and 16 weeks, implants were taken out and collected respectively and were made grinding slices. The bone-implant interface was observed with light microscope. And the bone-implant interface of polishing and layered implants after 8 weeks implantation was observed with scanning electron microscope. The element contents at the interface of polishing and layered implants before and after 8 weeks implantation were detected with EDAX. Results showed that there was hydroxyapatite(HA) precipitated on the titanium surfaceamellae bone in 8 weeks for thin HA coatings, and no HA debris were found at the interfacial zone. In addition, Ca and P content on the hydrothermal treated implant surface increased much more after implantation than that of polished implants. It was concluded that anodic oxidation followed by hydrothermal treatment could precipitate thin hydroxyapatie layer on the surface of cp titanium, which could improve early formation of woven bone and accelerate woven bone transferring to lamellae bone at the implanted site.

ABSTRACT

Objectives:To explore the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis by examining the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) in human inflammatory nasal polyps. Methods: Twenty five polyposis patients were selected, tissue TGF-β1~3 from nasal polyps and inferior turbinate mucosa were determined with immunohistochemistry APAAP method .The inferior turbinate mucosa from eight healthy volunteers were selected as control. Six polyp tissues were estimated with western-blot analyses to compare the characteristics of TGF-beta isoforms expression. Results: ①The expression of TGF-β1~3 in nasal polyps was significantly higher than that in nasal mucosa, it was undetectable in nasal mucosa from healthy volunteers;②TGF-β1 was the main isoform detected in nasal polyps. Conclusions: TGF-β, especially TGF-β1 is strongly expressed in inflammatory nasal polyps and its mucosa. TGF-β could induce modification of epithelium and connective tissue and therefore be involved in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis.
